POSCO and Anson Resources Team Up for Utah DLE Lithium Plant
South Korean steelmaker POSCO and Australia's Anson Resources are partnering to build a direct lithium extraction demonstration plant in Utah.
South Korean industrial giant POSCO (PKX) and Australian critical minerals company Anson Resources have announced a partnership to develop a direct lithium extraction (DLE) demonstration plant in Utah, marking a significant step toward domestic lithium production in the United States. The collaboration positions both companies at the forefront of an emerging technology race to unlock lithium from brine deposits more efficiently than conventional methods allow.
DLE technology is widely regarded as a potential game-changer for the lithium supply chain because it can extract lithium from underground brines faster, with less water usage, and with a smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional evaporation pond methods. Utah's brine-rich geology makes it a natural testing ground for such technology, and a successful demonstration could accelerate commercial-scale production timelines significantly.
For POSCO, which has been aggressively expanding its battery materials business beyond its steel roots, the Utah project represents another strategic move to secure upstream lithium resources. The company has previously invested in lithium projects across South America and other regions, reflecting a broader corporate push to vertically integrate into the electric vehicle supply chain. Anson Resources, meanwhile, controls the Paradox Lithium Project in Utah, giving the partnership a ready-made resource base for the demonstration effort.
The timing of this deal is notable given ongoing geopolitical pressure on Western nations to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled critical mineral supply chains. A domestically situated DLE plant in the U.S. could attract federal attention and potentially qualify for incentives under existing clean energy manufacturing legislation, adding a policy dimension to what is already a commercially compelling project.
